The newly introduced self-priming range utilises the same proven and patented design of other Vaughan chopper pumps with a hardened impeller, cutter bar and upper cutter which allows the pump to chop and pump solids laden waste material without the risk of clogging.

Pump Systems Ltd have recently supplied a Vaughan self-priming chopper pump to a large New Zealand wine company for pumping wastewater from an underground tank where solids material such as leaves, wine bottle tops, pieces of string, plastic caps and strapping caused clogging problems for the existing pumps. Installation of the Vaughan pump meant that existing suction screens could be removed, which have only caused problems in the past by getting clogged or “blanketed” with leaves and other debris.

Vaughan self-priming chopper pumps are available in four sizes with suctions and discharges up to 250mm. They are ideally suited for applications in all types of processing industries and local authority wastewater treatment plants where traditional submersible and surface pumps in pump stations suffer continual clogging problems and pipework blockages. Using a Vaughan self-priming chopper pump will allow for solids in the waste stream such as rag, rope, gloves, mop heads, bags, spoons, cardboard, wire, wood, metal strapping, meat wastes, offal, vegetables, chicken and turkey feathers, fish waste, scum and sludge to be handled with ease.

Since the conception of Rotamix over 8 years ago by Vaughan Co., USA, there are now over 550 systems operating worldwide in a wide range of municipal and industrial applications.
Looking after Vaughan and Rotamix sales for Australasia, Pump Systems Ltd have extensive experience in this area with Rotamix systems operating throughout New Zealand and Australia, as well as in Singapore.

The Rotamix system comprises of fixed nozzle assemblies that are mounted inside the tank to factory specified angles and are permanently tightened. No additional adjustment is required. The nozzles are constructed in ductile cast iron and are glass lined for abrasion resistance and reduced friction. The entire assemblies are then white metal sandblasted and powder coated to provide superior surface protection. Each nozzle mixing assembly comes with a 10-year full replacement warranty for wear and corrosion. There are no moving or rotating parts within the process and no scheduled nozzle assembly maintenance is required.

The unique mixing flow pattern created by Rotamix eliminates dead spots, reduces energy requirements and prevents against the formation of scum mats and solids settling inside the tank. The Rotamix system uses an externally mounted Vaughan Chopper Pump to recirculate and precondition the contents of the tank. The Vaughan Chopper Pump will handle solids laden material and sludge containing rags, fibres and hair. This virtually eliminates problems with fibrous material and other debris reweaving into clumps, while ensuring the pumps and nozzles remain clog-free.

When compared to conventional mixing systems, the Rotamix System can save the end user up to 60% in combined capital, operation and maintenance costs. With the ability to operate intermittently, even when mixing tanks after periods of storage, overall energy costs are significantly reduced. Depending on the process and layout of tanks, it is even possible to fill, mix and transfer multiple tanks using only one pump. The Rotamix system easily retrofits into existing tanks. All Rotamix systems come with a Mixing Performance Guarantee, where Vaughan Co. provide complete mixing system responsibility.

Having represented Vaughan Co. for the past 16 years, Pump Systems Ltd is pleased to be able to offer its clients world-class support and technical assistance. With their expertise in solving difficult solids handling problems and other challenging pumping applications, Pump Systems Ltd is perfectly positioned to offer leading solutions for today’s modern waste management processes.

The key to their process is to obtain a flow rate with a gentle low shear pumping action to preserve the original features of the transferred media. The special shape of the HCD screw impeller enables the centrifugal pump to transfer solids without any damage to the product and without the risk of clogging the pump.

Manufactured by Tecnicapompe (Italy), the HCD and ZCD screw impeller centrifugal pump is available in many different sizes and versions for flow rates up to 1,400 m3/h and heads up to 30 metres. The pump will handle solids up to a maximum size 100 mm and will withstand operating temperatures up to 120 degrees Celsius. These innovative screw impeller centrifugal pumps can be used with a wide variety of thick products up to 1000 centipoise or with products that have solid particles in suspension of up to 60% solids and 40% water.

Tecnicapompe centrifugal screw impeller pumps are supplied in either polished 316 stainless steel materials for food related applications or in 304 stainless steel. There are a range of mechanical seal options available as well as connection fittings that make these pumps ideally suited to a wide range of industrial and food processing applications.

The HCD and ZCD centrifugal pump has a long history of pumping delicate green and black olives in Spain, Greece, Turkey and Italy. Other products include fruit, whole vegetables such as onions, potatoes, peas, beans, mushrooms, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, sauces like Italian pesto, boiled poultry meat, tomato sauce, cheese curd, juice concentrates, winery must, tallow and dairy products. The largest version of the ZCD centrifugal pump can even transfer live fish up to 40 cm long and 1 kg in weight without damage.

The all stainless steel, insulated, high performance heat exchanger has been developed to meet special requirements for the heating or cooling of sludge in wastewater treatment plants. The unique patented design provides a compact heat exchanger with minimal maintenance needs and low running costs, making a heat exchanger unit from Lackeby Products a good investment.

The VSV heat exchanger channels provide a large throughput area that keeps pressure loss low and minimises the risk of clogging. Each level of sludge channels is surrounded by a rectangular water circuit, in which water for heating/cooling flows in the opposite direction to the sludge. The unique patented open turning chambers at each end contribute to a very compact design of heat exchanger that is simple to install. Inspection, disassembly and maintenance are made easy because the turning chambers are mounted on a common flanged assembly which also allows for ease of servicing if required. The innovative turning chambers provide even higher heat transfer by equalising the sludge’s temperature profile, delivering low running costs and higher energy efficiency.

A recent project involved the supply of several large Lackeby heat exchanger units to a wastewater treatment plant in Christchurch for sludge. Current ongoing projects include the upgrades of two large wastewater treatment plants in Australia.

Installation of a Lackeby heat exchanger will provide the end user with many process benefits including; an enhanced efficiency of digestion and hygenisation, equilisation of the sludge’s temperature profile, easy maintenance and elimanation of problems with multiple flanges and loose connections, minimises installation volume, reduces pressure losses, minimises risks of clogging and eliminates the risk of sludge contamination.

The requirement was for a pump to produce flows ranging from 4 to 10 L/min at a differential pressure of 2.5 bar. To achieve this, a Series 5500 Micropump was selected and due to the volatile nature of the liquid, would need to be run at very slow speeds ranging from 400 to 800rpm.

The body of the pump was to be constructed in Hastelloy C-276 material, which is extremely hard and offers excellent corrosion resistance to Sulfuric Acid and Hydrogen Peroxide, both of which make up part of the preparation. The gears and all static seals were in PTFE (Teflon) meterial.

As the exclusive distributor for Micropump in New Zealand, Pump Systems are able to offer clients state-of-the-art technology from a market leader in sealless, low-flow gear pumps for precise fluid control.

Material of this nature is notoriously difficult to pump, as most pumps will not cope due to clogging and binding of impellers and shafts. This is where a Vaughan Chopper Pump stands out from the rest with its patented chopping action and robust construction for use in heavy-duty solids handling applications.

The unique configuration of a Vaughan Chopper Pump consists of three main parts; the Cutter Bar, Impeller and Upper Cutter, which are all hardened to 60 Rockwell C for wear and impact resistance. The sharpened vanes on the Impeller meet with the arms on the Cutter Bar to effectively chop material as it enters the suction. To prevent stringy material from wrapping behind the Impeller, which is particularly important when pumping casings, the Upper Cutter is finely positioned with minimum clearances to shred and remove any stray solids that enter the mechanical seal area.

One of the main advantages of using a Vaughan Chopper Pump apart from its ability to pump difficult to handle solids is that potential blockages and plugging in the piping system are eliminated because the material is preconditioned and broken down.
